Take us through your career journey so far.
I joined Devonshires as a Paralegal in our Construction, Engineering, & Procurement team and then trained with Devonshires and qualified in the spring of 2021.
Please could you outline your area of expertise and what attracted you to it?
My expertise is in Construction, Engineering & Procurement disputes, I found that this was a perfect fit for me. My father has an architectural practice, so from an early age l was exposed to plans, drawings and taken around churches and old architecture. So that's been invaluable to me in assisting to understand the technical aspects of construction disputes. What I particularly enjoy is the varied aspects of construction law, you can be doing different disputes on different parts of construction and working with experts in their field in the preparation of cases.
What advice do you have for those individuals who are coming through the ranks at the moment and want to make Partner?
I would advise them that it's the old adage that hard work gets you to where you want to be, but also believe in your ability and your convictions and always be inquisitive in questioning because we don't know everything and that is a key to growth. We're very fortunate at Devonshires that we work in a friendly and collegiate atmosphere throughout the whole firm so I would advise people to ask questions and put their head above the parapet and to give their opinions because they will be listened to and they'll be valued.
What would you say to yourself as an NQ now that you’ve made Partner?
I would tell myself "the hard work you're putting in is going to be worth it and particularly the few more grey hairs that you're getting on your head, they're going to be worth it too!"
What networking advice do you have for people?
It's a people business, relationships are important. You don't have to necessarily grow relationships by attending events or networking, but by being responsive and being available to people when they need them. That's also important.
Tell us something interesting about yourself.
Prior to embarking on a career in law. In my younger and more formative years, I was a very keen snowboarder. I spent two winter seasons in the Alps and one winter season in Mammoth, California, generally larking about in the snow and it going upside down. That's probably why it aches to get up in the morning.
Who is the person at the firm that you most regularly refer work to?
I most regularly refer work to a colleague in the Housing Management & Property Litigation team. I do so because they are personable, they're an expert in their field and they're always very responsive, which is key to fostering client relationships.
