Take us through your career journey so far.
So my career journey started at Reading University where I studied law. I then went on to do my LPC and then trained at an Ipswich practice, which is my hometown. There I was lucky enough to advise the city sightseeing tour business and that got me excited about M&A law. I then moved to London to work in niche corporate boutique practices and then that that led me to working for a healthcare company where I was general counsel and I advised on setting the company up, helping them acquire small businesses to add to their suite of services and then I did commercial advice with them as well through national and global commercial agreements. That gave me really good experience in understanding how a business operates or what clients need on a day to day basis. More recently, I helped a firm's client because they had maternity cover for the head of legal and I'm continuing helping them on special projects.
Please could you outline your area of expertise and what attracted you to it?
My area expertise is corporate law, so l advise on M&A transactions. l also advise businesses on how they can set their business up and also how they can secure investments into it. I became interested in corporate law because l enjoy problem solving and helping businesses solve their problems. I also enjoy building relationships with people and helping them navigate the issues they have with their businesses.
What advice do you have for those individuals who are coming through the ranks at the moment and want to make Partner?
I would tell them to learn now to manage expectations and learn how to be a safe pair of hands. That can help your colleagues to lean on you and it helps you support them and that helps build relationships with the people you work with.
What networking advice do you have for people?
Networking advice I'd have is that if you're nervous, just talk about your hobbies and that can really relax the way you approach networking. Staying in touch with work colleagues is important, I know that because l am where I am because of it.
Tell us something interesting about yourself.
I created a card game called "Bonked", it's a cycling based card game. I like playing card games with friends and family, especially when you're traveling on a train to go cycling somewhere or just at home and you miss, you know, going out on the road because it's wet. I realised I'm good at drafting because of my day job, and because of that, I sort of put together some rules for a card game. It's probability based, I got friends and family to help with illustrations and tested out a whole load of prototypes and then ended up printing and creating a card game where you avoid getting the red card, which is Bonked!
