James interview
James discusses the origins of TAN and some of the things the network have already discussed in respect of solving the temporary accommodation crisis. Watch his interview or read the transcript below to find out more.
Why was TAN formed?
TAN is the temporary accommodation network it's a voluntary initiative set up by ourselves, Campbell Tickell, and Devonshires. We've come together to share solutions and best practice to the growing temporary accommodation crisis. As two organisations, we recognise the mounting scale of the crisis and the really excessive financial costs involved, so as two organisations with a long-standing history in the housing sector we wanted to bring together our expertise and some of our contacts to find a way out of this crisis.
Have solutions on how to solve the temporary accommodation crisis already been discussed?
We've heard a number of innovative approaches being discussed by members of the temporary accommodation network so far. This ranges from aspects like exploring new modular solutions to temporary accommodation, use of outside social equity investment to bring more supply into temporary accommodation, we've heard about particular bespoke models of tenancy support, and we've heard about councils working in partnership with others to bring underuse public assets into use as temporary accommodation.
With some of those innovations, we're not suggesting that there's any single solution but we think there's a range of approaches for people to learn from and I suppose one of the key aspects of it is very much about partnerships so we know that local authorities are under considerable constraints and all of those examples of innovation in some respects involve a local authority working with a range of partners to bring in new solutions and new resources to bear on the growing crisis of temporary accommodation.
