Project 123 is a joint initiative between London Councils and the G15 to explore potential solutions for the ongoing temporary accommodation crisis in the Capital. The Project’s exploration of potential solutions to the crisis in London aims to lead the way to national solutions for the temporary accommodation crisis.
The initiative was launched to tackle London’s rapidly developing temporary accommodation challenges, with the name highlighting the alarming statistic that 1 in 23 children in London are without permanent accommodation. In fact, since the Project began in 2023 that statistic has worsened to 1 in 21, showing how urgently the crisis needs resolving. UK spending on temporary accommodation has surged to an alarming c£5.5m, up from just £60k when P123 was first launched.
The Temporary Accommodation Network (TAN) comprises local authorities, housing associations, charities, and private companies in a coordinated effort to tackle the unprecedented challenge in the housing sector. In close alignment with Project 123, its aim is to identify solutions, share best practice, and influence policymakers to impact the current provision of temporary accommodation.
This session will provide an update on Project 123’s current position and explore our potential solutions for addressing the crisis, as well as outlining the next steps for Project 123. The second part of the event will be run by the Temporary Accommodation Network and will focus on the Government’s homelessness strategy, funding and the subsidy gap.
